Jeff Hargrave remakes historical artworks, such as Matisse. As an African-American artist, he has inserted black figures (and at times stereotypes black imagery) into paintings where only white figures were once represented. This substitution of black for white, and stereotype for art historical images, causes a great deal of tension and friction in Jeff’s works.
