Joachim Koester

Koester has traveled to remote or little-known communities to capture images on film. One location he visited was Christiania, an anacrhistic commune located on a former military base in Denmark. It was founded in the 1970s by people who were interested in develping their own social and economic structure. Given the desig-nation of being a "free city" by the Danish government, Christiania continues to thrive. His photographs of this location were taken using day-for-night film, producing a curiously unsettling effect.
